Background

Gerald Maffei is a member of the American Institute of Architects, and a registered Architect in the state of Texas.

He is a Professor of Architecture in the College of Architecture at Texas A&M University. He has written on the importance of place making, and has been an invited critic and speaker in many schools of Architecture in the United States, Italy, and Switzerland.

In 1996 Mr. Maffei, together with Stanley + PSA, Joint Venture Architects, received the Caudill Award from the Texas Architect, the Texas Society of Architects, the Texas Association of School Administrators, and the Texas Association of School Boards, for the design of Franklin High School.

In the same year, Mr. Maffei together with Stanley + PSA, Joint Venture Architects received an Honor Award for Oustanding Design, from the El Paso Chapter of the Texas Society of Architects, for the design of Franklin High School.

Mr. Maffei’s Tin House was illustrated with six pages in the book, Private Retreats / Casas Refugio by Gustao G. Galfetti. published in 1995 by GG Gustavo Gilli in Barcelona.

In January of 1995 Progressive Architecture led off their series on Green Architecture with a House with a very Long Porch: by Lars Lerup & Gerald Maffei.

Mr. Maffei’s work was included in a major exhibit at the Mebane Gallery at the University of Texas At Austin in 1994. The exhibit, curated by Kevin Alter was titled Five Architects – Five Buildings in Texas, Natalie Appel, Gary Cunningham, Carlos Jiminez, Lake/Flato, and Gerald Maffei. Mr. Maffei also gave the Kamrath Lecture accompanying the exhibition.

Mr. Maffei received the Citation of Honor, from the Austin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 1993 In Recognition of Excellence in Design for the John Fairey Residence, Hempstead Texas, together with Lars Stanley & John Fairey.

Mr. Maffei’s work was also featured in Progressive Architecture Magazine in December of 1989, and June of 1987.
